- TRAINING COMMANDS
- This is a list of commands that I use with all the dogs that come in for Boarded Training.
Give the command only once – if the dog doesn’t obey immediately, help it to do so. Never give a command that you can’t enforce –this is very important.
LET’S GO—command used when walking the dog to keep the dog on your left and under control with a loose leash.
COME—I use the dog’s name and the command “come”.
I often give a food reward as soon as I have the dog’s collar in my hand. Watch your tone of voice with this command—the dog won’t come if it sounds like he will be disciplined when he reaches the owner. Do not call the dog to you and do something that he dislikes – go and get him for those things.
SIT—Means sit immediately. Never say sit down – that’s two different commands.
DOWN—Lie down.
STAY—Means the dog can only move his head and his tail. Do not give this command unless you are willing to enforce it.
FREE—This is the release command from any type of stay command. The dog is not allowed to break its stay until it is given the release command.
DROP—I use this command when I take something from the dog’s mouth.
TRADE—Exchange whatever is in the dog’s mouth for food.
EASY—Used to remind the dog not to pull on the leash.
OFF—Is the command that is used to remind the dog not to jump on people. Make sure you never pet the dog when it jumps on you or you will be
rewarding bad behavior. I usually knee the dog or use a leash correction for this behavior.
LEAVE IT—the command used to stop the dog from either picking up or smelling something that he shouldn’t.
It is very important that everyone in the household use the same commands and be very consistent.
If you aren’t, it takes much longer for the dog to learn what’s expected of him. It takes time and patience to have a well trained dog.
